Fixing Broken or Incorrect Social Media Links in 5 Minutes or Less

Updated: 4 days ago

You know those little Facebook and Instagram icons on your website?

They look like they’re ready to connect people to your social pages.

But if they haven’t been updated, they might not be doing anything at all.

What’s Going On?

When you build a website using a template, most of the social icons come pre-loaded with links. But those links usually go to:

  • The homepage of Facebook, Instagram, or another platform

  • A sample or placeholder account

  • Or nothing at all

Which means your visitors are clicking… and then leaving. Probably a little confused.

Why It Matters

  • It helps people actually find and follow you

  • It makes your website feel complete and trustworthy

  • It’s one of those little details that shows you’re paying attention

How to Fix It Fast

  1. Open your website editor

  2. Click on each social icon

  3. Find the option labeled Link or URL

  4. Paste in the link to your real profile (like https://www.instagram.com/yourname)

  5. Save your changes and publish

Bonus tip: After you hit publish, click each icon to make sure it’s going where you expect.

Worth a Quick Check

Even if you think your links are set up right, it’s worth clicking through once in a while — especially if you’ve updated your social handles, rebranded, or copied sections from an old site.

It only takes a minute, and now you know exactly where to look.
